NBME Strategic Educators Enhancement Fellowship (SEEF) Program Cohort 3

Ends on

Strategic Educators Enhancement Fund (SEEF) Fellowship Call for Letters of Intent

To support early career medical educators seeking to develop skills in medical education and assessment research, NBME is announcing the third cohort of the Strategic Educators Enhancement Fellowship (SEEF) Program. Supporting the medical education and assessment science communities is the driving force behind our work at NBME. While centered on assessment of physicians, our focus encompasses the spectrum of health professionals along the continuum of education, training and practice and includes research in evaluation as well as development of assessment instruments.

To support our mission and in recognition of our valuable collaboration with medical education, NBME is pleased to announce the third cohort of the Strategic Educators Enhancement Fellowship (SEEF) Program. The primary goal of the Fellowship is to provide an opportunity for medical school faculty to enhance their skills in assessment research and work collaboratively with NBME scientists to develop new approaches to medical education assessment.

Goals of the Program:

This fellowship is a project-based faculty development program that has been established to:

  • Foster professional development and career development of early career faculty (assistant professors)
  • Promote assessment-focused scholarship about innovative approaches that will enhance the assessment of individuals across the continuum of medical education and in active independent practice
  • Support a cohort of faculty who will work as small teams with NBME staff and invited faculty mentors (Jennifer R. Kogan, MD, Perelman School of Medicine, The University of Pennsylvania and Larry D. Gruppen, PhD, University of Michigan Medical School) to identify and develop questions and a research project that fall within one of the following themes:

o Technology-enhanced simulation assessment in medical education

                    o AI in medical education/assessment

o Measuring student progress and learning through formative testing

o Clinical reasoning and communication skill development

A successful fellowship outcome is a scholarly presentation or publication.

To achieve the Fellowship goals, eight (8) individuals will be selected to form two education and assessment-focused research cohorts that will be led by NBME and collaborating faculty mentors. Each member of the cohort will be expected to make meaningful contributions to the project team.

The Fellowship will train the cohort of faculty to use the rich information and subject matter expertise of the NBME; to operate effectively in an educational team; to communicate outcomes to a broad range of audiences; and to work as a community to conceptualize new approaches to assessment. Learning to work in this type of network is challenging and involves a willingness to collaborate and learn with and from a research group.

Eligibility:

Faculty who are early in their medical education research career (rank of assistant professor) are encouraged to apply.

Expectations:

  • Commitment of up to 18 months for Fellowship activitites
  • Travel to Philadelphia 3-4 times during the Fellowship program (travel costs will be sponsored by the NBME)
  • Attend every in-person session and participate in monthly Zoom meetings
  • Actively engage in the cohort and contribute proportionately to the work of the team and development of a scholarly product
  • Collaboratively develop research questions and scholarly presentation or publication
  • Present at an NBME conference or symposium
  • NBME will sponsor Fellows to present at national conferences, subject to budget      availability
  • Conduct a formal presentation within their institution, for example:

               o educational grand rounds
